BEAUMONT, Texas — This week, the Lamar University women's golf team hosts the Cardinal Challenge, Monday-Tuesday, March 31-April 1 at the Beaumont Country Club.
Day 1 of the competition features 36 holes with an 8:30 a.m. start while Day 2 features 18 holes of play also beginning at 8:30 a.m.
Blinn College, McLennan Community College, Midwestern State, Niagara University, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Texas State join the host Cardinals in the seven-team field.
Beaumont Country Club, which underwent renovations in 2004, is a par-71 course playing at 6,077 yards.
The country club was established in 1906 as it celebrates its 119th year making it one of the oldest clubs in the state of Texas.
CARDINAL CHALLENGE
Since the 2004-2005 season, LU has hosted the Cardinal Challenge 11 times.
This will be the fifth straight spring the tournament is being hosted after it was canceled in 2020.
The only other season the tournament wasn't held was 2007-2008 when the Cardinals hosted the Southland Conference tournament.
During the 2004-2005 season, the Cardinal Challenge was played in Port Arthur at The Palms at Pleasure Island Golf Course.
The following season the tournament was moved to Brentwood – Country Club of Texas on the southwest side of Beaumont.
Beaumont Country Club has been the site of the tournament since the 2006-2007 season.
LU captured back-to-back-to-back team titles in 2021-2022, 2022-2023 and 2023-2024. The Cardinals have won the tournament seven times since 2004-2005.
Last spring, the Cardinals finished with a six-shot lead over A&M-Corpus Christi while they had three players finish in the top 10.
Only once since the 2004-2005 season has the tournament featured match play and that was in 2017-2018.
LAST TIME OUT
The Cardinals were last in action back on March 11 when they finished 12th out of 15 teams at the Riverbend Intercollegiate in Sugar Land.
