LU uses 11-run fourth to secure sweep of UIW with 17-6 victory

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — Behind an 11-run fourth, Lamar University was able to propel itself to a 17-6 victory in seven innings over the University of the Incarnate Word on Sunday afternoon at Sullivan Field to extend the winning streak to eight games.

This is the second straight conference sweep for LU, improving to 9-6 in Southland Conference play. 

LU got things going early on the offensive side in the top of the second after Heladio Moreno hit a leadoff double to left center.

Matt Ryan was later hit by a pitch with one out. Hector Rodriguez then delivered an RBI single up the middle.

Bryce Grizzaffi laid down a bunt single to score Ryan from third to make the score 2-0.

LU added a run in the top of the third when Zane Spinn hit into a double play with the bases loaded to drive in Tab Tracy.

LU knocked down the floodgates by scoring 11 runs on nine hits in the top of the fourth to extend its lead to 14-0.

Sending 17 batters to the plate in the inning, Damian Ruiz started off the rally with a hard-hit infield RBI single to third.

Tracy then drew a walk with the bases loaded. Zak Skinner later followed up with a two-RBI single to right.

Moreno tallied his third hit on an RBI single to center. Spinn added with another RBI single to center to make the score 9-0.

Spinn scored on a wild pitch and then Grizzaffi belted a two-run home run to left.

Ruiz made the score 13-0 by scoring on a wild pitch. Skinner drove in the final run of the rally with an RBI single to right center.

UIW ended the shutout by scoring two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth.

Spinn hit an RBI double to right center to put LU ahead by 12 runs in the top of the sixth.

LU tacked on two more runs in the top of the seventh after a bases-loaded walk was drawn by Connor Kaiser and Aiden Baumann brought in a run with a sacrifice fly to right.

  • LU had seven batters with a multi-hit afternoon.
  • Grizzaffi went 3 for 3 with two singles, a home run and three RBIs.
  • Rodriguez had three singles, a walk and an RBI to finish 3 for 3.
  • Moreno finished 3 for 5 with two singles, a double, a walk and an RBI to extend his hit streak to six games. Moreno went 8 for 14 during the weekend with two RBIs.
  • Ruiz tallied two singles, a walk and an RBI to go 2 for 3. He extended his on base streak to 29 games and hitting streak to 12 games.
  • Skinner went 2 for 5 with two singles, a walk and two RBIs, extending his hit streak to six games. He had four RBIs during the weekend.
  • Spinn finished 2 for 5 with a single, double and two RBIs.
  • Easton Culp had a pair of singles to go 2 for 2 with a run scored.
  • Chris Olivier improved to 4-1 after striking out four batters in four innings pitched.
  • LU had 17 hits to UIW's eight.
  • LU batters were walked 11 times. Tracy was walked three times.
