Cards hold off Owls for 2-1 victory

BEAUMONT, Texas — Matt Ryan's two-RBI double to left center proved to be enough as the Lamar University Cardinals defeated the Rice University Owls, 2-1, Tuesday night at Vincent-Beck Stadium.

LU improves to 9-0 in midweek games while it also notched its first win over the Owls at home since 2017.

Rice threatened early with two outs in the top of the first after a double and an infield single, but it left the runners stranded.

After being retired in order in the bottom of the first, the Cards got their first baserunner as Zak Skinner singled to right to get things going in the bottom of the second.

Zane Spinn then hit an infield single to put runners at first and second.

The Owls got two outs on back-to-back strikeouts. Ryan then stepped up and delivered the clutch hit.

LU did not get another baserunner until the bottom of the fourth when Logan Hamm singled to right.

Rice threatened again in the top of the fifth as it got runners at first and third, but the runners were left stranded.

The Owls cut the deficit to one run in the top of the seventh with a two-out RBI triple to right center by Trey Duffield.
