Cards sweep Islanders with 8-0 shutout in Game 3

BEAUMONT, Texas — Behind a solid team effort, the Lamar University Cardinals pulled out the brooms Sunday afternoon to sweep Texas A&M-Corpus Christi by notching an 8-0 win in Game 3 at Vincent-Beck Stadium.

The Cards are now 6-6 in Southland Conference play. This is their first conference sweep since April 26-28 of last season against Incarnate Word.

LU got things going in the bottom of the third after two straight one-out singles by Matt Ryan and Damian Ruiz.

Tab Tracy was then hit by a pitch to load up the bases setting up the two-RBI single up the middle by Zak Skinner.

The Cards rallied for four runs on four hits in the bottom of the seventh.

Heladio Moreno put down a bunt single and then stole second. Connor Kaiser advanced Moreno to third on a fielder's choice sacrifice bunt.

Ruiz hit an RBI single to left center and then Tracy drilled an RBI double off the left field wall.

Skinner brought in Ruiz with a sacrifice fly to right and then Spinn hit an RBI single through the right side.

LU got two more runs off the bat of Brayden Evans as he hit a two-RBI double down the right field line in the bottom of the eighth.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • The Cards out-hit the Islanders, 12-4.
  • Ruiz finished 3 for 4 with three singles, a walk and an RBI. He extended his on base streak to 25 games while his hitting streak is at eight.
  • Evans extended his hit streak to 13 games by going 1 for 4 with a double and two RBIs.
  • Tracy had a single, double, a walk and an RBI to go 2 for 3.
  • Skinner had three RBIs going 1 for 4 with a single.
  • Ryan finished 2 for 2 with two singles and a run scored.
  • Spinn and Moreno each went 1 for 4 with a single. Spinn tallied his 27th RBI of the season.
  • Chris Olivier improved to 3-1 after tossing six innings allowing three hits with five strikeouts.
  • Austin Neal allowed one hit in three innings to earn his second save while he tallied one strikeout.
