Cards take 2-0 lead in series with 12-6 win over Islanders

BEAUMONT, Texas — Behind 13 hits the Lamar University Cardinals took a 2-0 lead in the series against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi by notching a 12-6 victory Saturday night at Vincent-Beck Stadium.

On six singles the Cards were able to take a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second.

LU got three-straight singles from Zak Skinner, Zane Spinn and Reese Beheler to start the inning. Bryce Grizzaffi then brought in a run on a sacrifice fly to left.

Heladio Moreno hit a grounder to second to drive in Spinn.

Matt Ryan and Damian Ruiz then delivered back-to-back RBI singles.

The Islanders cut the deficit in half with an RBI double and an RBI groundout in the top of the third.

Moreno laid down a bunt single that brought in Spinn in the bottom half of the third to make the score 5-2.

Spinn hit a clutch two-RBI double down the left field line to extend LU's lead to five runs in the bottom of the fourth.

A&M-Corpus Christi rallied back to trail by one in the top of the sixth when it scored four runs on one hit.

The Cardinals responded by scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth as Skinner and Grizzaffi both drew a walk with the bases loaded while Spinn brought in a run on a fielder's choice to third.

LU tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single through the right side by Tab Tracy and a wild pitch.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Ruiz reached base three times going 1 for 3 with a single and two walks to increase his on base streak to 24 games and his hitting streak to seven games.
  • Brayden Evans was one of five players that tallied a multi-hit night. Evans went 2 for 4 with two singles, a walk and an RBI to extend his hit streak to 12 games.
  • Tracy had two singles to go 2 for 4 with an RBI.
  • Skinner reached base four times finishing 2 for 3 with two singles, two walks and an RBI.
  • Spinn tallied a single, double, a walk and three RBIs to go 2 for 4.
  • Beheler was walked twice to go 1 for 3 with a single.
  • Moreno went 2 for 5 with two singles and two RBIs.
  • Ryan finished 1 for 4 with a single and an RBI.
  • Grizzaffi had two RBIs to give him six for the season.
  • Carter Sutton improved to 3-0 after throwing five innings allowing five hits and two earned runs while he tallied three strikeouts.
  • Fabian Ramirez earned the four-inning save, his first save of the year, as he struck out four batters and allowed two hits and one earned run.
