Cardinals Post Shutout Victory Over Panthers

BEAUMONT, Texas – Tuesday was originally scheduled to be a non-conference doubleheader between Lamar University and Prairie View A&M but the weather in the area forced the two teams to cancel the opener and play only the afternoon match. In the end, the delayed start did not bother the Cardinals as they posted a 7-0 victory.

Lamar (3-12) took the early 1-0 lead after wins from Arina Gudovskaya and Emma Palus at No. 3 doubles and Asta Miettinen and Megan Do on court 1.

The Cardinals looked to extend their lead as the two teams made the transition to singles and turned to courts 3-6 to put the match away. Do gave the Red and White a 2-0 lead with her straight sets victory over PVAMU's Cierra Garcia, 6-4, 6-4, on court No. 3. Sophomore Martina Alcaino followed suit moments later with a 6-3, 6-0 decision over Amaya Bobadilla.

Leading 3-0, the Cardinals needed just one more win from the four remaining courts to record the overall team victory. LU didn't have to wait long as Palus defeated Prairie View's Precious Ugochukwu, 6-0, 7-5, at No. 6 singles.

With the victory in hand, the Cardinals still had more work to do. Sophomore Savannah Bijlsma defeated the Panthers' El Fadilil, 6-2, 6-2, on court No. 5 singles.

Even though the team outcome was decided there was still plenty of suspense remaining in the match as both courts 1 and 2 went to a third set but the Cards took care of business on both courts. Gudovskaya recorded a victory with one of the most unique scores an athlete can record in tennis. After winning the first set 6-2, she dropped a second-set tiebreak, 7-6 (7-0). Undaunted, the LU freshman rallied for the 10-0 shutout in the super tiebreak third set. Miettinen closed out the day by posting a 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 victory over PVAMU's Cierra Garcia at line No. 2.

The Cardinals return to conference play Saturday when they host Stephen F. Austin at 1 p.m. The match against the Ladyjacks will begin at 1 p.m. from the Thompson Family Tennis Center.
