Ryan McCarthy Welcome

Ryan McCarthy Joins Lamar Football Staff

| By:
BEAUMONT, Texas – A former Northeast Conference Coach of the Year, Ryan McCarthy, has been named offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach announced Lamar University head coach Pete Rossomando Monday afternoon. McCarthy announcement comes just 24 hours prior to the start of spring camp.

"I have a long-established relationship with Ryan that goes back 13 years," said Rossomando. "I have worked with him at different stops during my career. He is a great coach and recruiter, but even more important he is an even better individual."

McCarthy took over the reins at Central Connecticut State following Rossomando's hire at Rutgers. McCarthy continued to build on the success of the CCSU program guiding the Blue Devils to an 11-1 (.917) record, a Northeast Conference title (following a perfect league record) and the program's second NCAA FCS Playoff berth. The Blue Devils climbed as high as 17th in the national polls that season.

McCarthy ended that year as the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston Division I Coach of the Year and was a finalist for the Eddie Robinson Award (FCS Football's National Coach of the Year).

Prior to being named head coach, McCarthy served as the Blue Devils offensive coordinator. During his time at CCSU, McCarty's squads were known for being one of the top offenses in the NEC. During the 2018 season, the Blue Devils led the NEC in scoring (33.8 ppg) and rolled up more than 432 yards per game. He also mentored the school's all-time leading passer – Jacob Dolegala who would go on to sign with the Cincinnati Bengals – and produced a 1,000-yard rusher in 2017.

McCarthy moved to New Britain, Conn., from Albany where he spent 10 seasons with the Great Danes serving as quarterbacks coach, pass game coordinator and eventually offensive coordinator. McCarthy also built the NEC's top scoring offense while at Albany including a 2012 run that saw the Great Danes average better than 34 points per game on their way to a conference title – one of six during his time in Albany.

The Cardinals will take to the field Tuesday to open spring camp. The workout will be the first of 15 culminating in the annual Coach Payton Spring Game Thursday, April 24th.
