BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University was dominant Tuesday afternoon sweeping a doubleheader against Dillard University. LU outscored the Bleu Devils, 9-2, in the two matches wining the first 5-2 and coming back in the second to record the shutout, 4-0.
The Cardinals took an early 1-0 lead with wins at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles and during the transition to singles play Lamar didn't let up. Big Red got consecutive wins from
Leon Nickel (No. 1 singles),
Fabian Anthin (No. 4),
Stefano Chappuis (No. 5) and
Guy Dagan (No. 6) to clinch the first match before Dillard got on the scoreboard with wins on the final two courts. All of Lamar's wins came in straight sets.
The two teams took an hour break between matches before returning for the second match.
The second contest started in similar fashion as Lamar took two of the three matches in doubles to win the point and take the early lead. The Cardinals raced out to first-set leads on four of the six singles courts in the second match and never looked back (courts 3-6). The Cardinals held their lead on all for courts winning in straight sets for the shutout victory.
The two courts where Lamar was trailing in the opening set never finished as the teams agreed to a clinch-clinch format in the second set halting all unfinished matches when the deciding point was scored.
The Red and White return to action Friday when they travel to Prairie View A&M to take on the Panthers in a doubleheader. The first match against the Panthers is set for a 10 a.m. start followed by the second at 2 p.m.
