Cardinals Hosting Baylor at LU Softball Complex Wednesday

BEAUMONT, Texas - Lamar University (13-10, 2-1 SLC) started Southland Conference play by taking two-of-three against conference rival McNeese over the weekend. On Wednesday, the Cardinals will host a midweek non-conference contest against Big XII opponent Baylor (11-13) at the LU Softball Complex. The first pitch is scheduled to be thrown at 5:30 p.m.

The Cardinals earned their first-ever series victory over McNeese to begin conference play. LU's game-one rally fell short, 6-5, but they bounced back with two straight shutout wins, 7-0 and 4-0.
 
Cardinal Spotlight - Cala Wilson
Wilson batted .686 (7-of-11) with five RBIs plus an on-base percentage of .714 as she helped lead the Cardinals to three wins. Going one-for-one with two walks against Texas Southern, she had three straight two-hit games against McNeese. While she drove in one RBI in LU's 6-5 loss in game one, Wilson drove in three RBI in game two and picked up an RBI triple in the third game.
 
Cardinal Spotlight - Mallory Pitre
Pitre earned a win and a save last week in two appearances allowing no runs on three hits with six strikeouts in 8.0 innings of work. She started LU's Tuesday game against Texas Southern and won 11-0 with four shutout innings allowing two hits and striking out a season-high six batters. Then, in Friday's game two win over McNeese, she allowed one hit in four shutout innings of relief to hold the Cowgirls without a run.
 
17 Straight Zeroes
After the fourth inning in game one, the Cardinals had given up six runs. From then on, LU's pitching staff threw 17 consecutive scoreless innings to end the series. Emma Wardlaw (four hits, 1 K) pitched three scoreless innings in LU's 7-0 win to earn the win while Pitre recorded the four-inning save. Reagan Smith pitched a complete game shutout in the 4-0 victory allowing five hits and striking out four batters.

About the Bears
The Bears are 11-13 after dropping two of three in their Big 12 opener against Kansas. Shaylon Govan has a team-high .378 batting average with five homers while Brooklyn Carter leads with 21 hits. Carter (12) is also one of four BU players with double-digit RBI along with Karynton Dawson (12), Amber Tovan (11), and Abi Flores (12). Lexie Warncke has won four games in the circle and leads the pitching staff with a 3.56 ERA.

LU resumes conference play this weekend by heading to Nacogdoches to meet with Stephen F. Austin. Friday's lone contest starts at 5 p.m. while Saturday's doubleheader begins at noon.
