BEAUMONT, Texas — Behind 12 hits, the Lamar University Cardinals notched an 11-5 win over the New Mexico State Aggies on Tuesday night at Vincent-Beck Stadium.
After a leadoff walk by
Damian Ruiz and a bunt single by
Brayden Evans,
Zane Spinn hit a two-RBI double down the right field line to put the Cards on the board in the bottom of the first.
Zak Skinner later delivered an RBI single through the left side.
Heladio Moreno kept things going with a single that led to a two-RBI double down the right field line by
Tab Tracy to extend LU's lead to 5-0.
The Cardinals got their leadoff man aboard once more in the bottom of the second when
Matt Ryan was walked.
A single by Evans put runners at the corners for Spinn, who doubled to left to drive in a run.
LU pushed across another run on a wild pitch and then Spinn scored on an inning-ending double play to make the score 8-0.
The Aggies ended the shutout in the top of the third with a sacrifice fly to left.
Tracy hit a leadoff double in the bottom half of the third and then had a stolen base to setup the RBI groundout by Ryan to put the Cards ahead by eight.
NMSU was able to push across a run after four batters were walked in the top of the fourth.
The Aggies cut the deficit to five in the top of the sixth after a two-RBI single up the middle.
NMSU continued to chip away at the deficit as it added a run on an RBI triple in the top of the seventh.
Tracy came through in the clutch in the bottom half of the seventh when he drove in two runs on a triple to right center.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Tracy finished 4 for 4 with a single, two doubles, a triple and four RBIs. He has tallied nine multi-hit games this season while this was his second four-RBI game of the season.
- Tracy now leads the team with a .417 batting average
- Spinn had two doubles to go 2 for 5 with three RBIs.
- Moreno went 2 for 4 with a pair of singles.
- Evans scored twice to go 2 for 5 with two singles, extending his hitting streak to five games.
- Skinner had two singles to finish 2 for 3 with a walk and an RBI.
- Ruiz was walked twice. He has reached base safely in 17 straight games.
- Jayden Shertel picked up his first win of the season after he allowed three hits in three innings with three strikeouts.
- The LU pitching staff finished with nine strikeouts. Trent Baker fanned three batters in 1.2 innings of relief while Joshua Shimmin tallied two strikeouts in 1.2 innings.
