HAMMOND, La. – After having Saturday's match at McNeese postponed due to weather, the Lamar University women's tennis team returned to action Monday against Southeastern Louisiana. Unfortunately, the Lions came out on top in a 5-2 decision from the SLU Tennis Complex.
The Lions took the doubles point with wins on courts 2 and 3. The match on court one was halted when the point was awarded which was tough for LU as both courts 1 and 2 were locked in tight battles.
The Cardinals trailed 3-0 before freshman
Arina Gudovskaya got the Red and White on the scoreboard with her hard-fought victory at line one. Gudovskaya bested Southeastern's top player, Leana Gomez in a tiebreak, 7-6 (7-5), in the opening set and closed things out with a 6-3 decision in the second to take the match and win the point.
Junior
Megan Do followed suit moments later following nearly the same script over the Lions' Claudia Di Leonardo. Do posted a 7-5 victory in the first and came back in the second set to finish out the victory with a 6-4 decision.
With Gudovskaya and Do's victories in the books, Lamar pulled back within in a point placing all focus on courts 2 and 5 to determine the final outcome. The Cardinals needed victories on both courts for the overall win and both matches were headed to a tiebreak. Unfortunately, the Lions won both remaining matches for the final score.
Lamar returns to action Wednesday when it travels to Orlando, Fla., to take on Western Carolina and South Dakota. The match against the Catamounts will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. followed by the contest against USD Friday at 11 a.m.
