BEAUMONT, Texas – It was a tough start to the weekend for the Lamar University women's tennis team dropping a 4-0 decision to UTSA Saturday afternoon at the Thompson Family Tennis Center. The loss drops the Cardinals to 2-3 (.400) on the season.
Lamar split the first two matches in doubles with their guests as the team of
Arina Gudovskaya and
Luana Paiva quickly sat down the Roadrunners' Letizia Corsini and Arina Babenko, 6-1. Unfortunately for LU, the Cardinals were unable to gain any moment in the remaining doubles match as UTSA picked up the point.
The Cardinals were attempting to tie the match on court No. 3 singles and steal back the momentum but Paiva was forced to retire from the match due to an injury despite being up a set and 4-2 in the second.
Trailing 2-0, junior
Megan Do was locked in a tough battle at the second position forcing her match to a tiebreak, but UTSA's Ekua Youri held on to edge out Do, 7-6 (7-5) to take an early lead. That would be as close as the Cardinals would get Saturday as the 'Runners took matches on courts 1 and 6 to close out the day.
Lamar returns to action Sunday to host former conference rival Sam Houston. The match against the Bearkats will begin at 11 a.m. from the Thompson Family Tennis Center.
