Shorthanded Cardinals Fall to Sam Houston

BEAUMONT, Texas – Down three key members of the squad to injury, the Lamar University women's tennis team came up short Sunday afternoon in a match against former conference rival Sam Houston, 4-0.

The Bearkats took a close match on court No. 2 doubles, 6-4, to secure the point which was heartbreaking for Lamar as the Cards were playing for the win at line 1 when the match was halted.

As the two teams made the transition to singles Sam Houston grabbed the upper hand, but the Cardinals took the opening set at No. 3 singles and were locked in a tight match at the No. 6 position. Junior Megan Do rallied from an opening set loss on court 2 and was tied heading into the fifth game of the second set.

Freshman Asta Miettinen took the opening set against the Bearkats' Jacqueline Schnabel, 6-2, and was leading 4-2 in the second, but that is when SHSU started to close out matches on the other courts. Sam Houston's first win came on court 1, followed quickly by a straight-sets decision at No. 4. The Bearkats closed things out with the final decision at No. 6 singles.

The Cardinals will look to regroup before the next contest when they travel to Las Cruces, N.M., to take on New Mexico State. The match against the Aggies is slated for a noon start Friday.
