ABILENE, Texas – Sophomore
Leon Nickel picked up a hard fought 6-1, 1-6, 6-4 victory over Abilene Christian's Daniel Linkuns-Morozovs Saturday morning but Lamar University was unable to follow up with anymore wins as the Wildcats held on for a 6-1 victory.
The loss snaps a small two-match win streak that saw the Cardinals outscore its previous two opponents by an 11-3 tally and drops LU to 7-5 (.583).
The Cardinals found themselves down 3-0 when Nickel picked up his singles victory to put an end to an early ACU run. Freshmen
Louis Drapeau and
Lukas Hamacher were battling to tie the overall match back up. Drapeau was headed to a tiebreaker in the first set against ACU's Alejandro Verdasco, while Hamacher and Martin Delnido were headed to a super tiebreak after splitting the first two sets on court 6. Unfortunately, the Wildcats took both matches ending any threat of a late rally by the Cardinals.
Lamar returns to action Sunday when they travel to College Station, Texas to take on No. 9 Texas A&M. The match against the Aggies is set for a 6 p.m. start.
