Cardinals shine in home-opening 10-3 win over Bison

BEAUMONT, Texas — Behind a solid start from Carter Sutton and 15 hits from the offense, the Lamar University Cardinals won their home opener over the North Dakota State Bison, 10-3, on a cold and wet Tuesday afternoon at Vincent-Beck Stadium.

It was a quick and early start for the LU bats as Reese Beheler drove in two runs with a single through the right side in the first inning.

Brayden Evans then crushed a two-run home run to right to extend the lead to 5-0 in the second.

The Cardinals got one more run on a single to left center by Zane Spinn.

Damian Ruiz tallied the second home run of the afternoon as he belted a two-run shot to right center to make the score 8-0.

Sutton retired his first six batters in order while he did not allow a hit until the top of the fourth.

North Dakota State ended the shutout in the top of the sixth when Noah Gordon hit a two-run home run down the right field line.

LU extended its lead to eight runs in the bottom half of the sixth when Easton Culp delivered a two-RBI single through the left side.

  • Tab Tracy extended his hitting streak to four games after he went 3 for 5 with three singles and a walk.
  • Tracy has a team-high eight hits while he is batting .667.
  • Ruiz also had a three-hit performance, tallying two singles, a home run and two RBIs.

 HOME SWEET HOME

The Cardinals have won their last seven straight home openers.

LU is 25-5 in home openers since 1990 and 18-2 since 2000.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

LU is now 8-4 against the Bison since 2016. The Bison had won the last three meetings.
