EL PASO, Texas – It was a tough afternoon for the Lamar University women's tennis team dropping a 4-0 decision at UTEP. The loss drops the Cardinals to 2-6 (.250) on the season.
UTEP took the opening point of the day in doubles taking matches on courts 3 and 1 respectively, which was unfortunate for the Red and White as they had the match on court 2 all tied up. The Cardinal duo of
Luana Paiva and
Arina Gudovskaya was putting up a strong fight tied at 5-5 heading into the 11
th game but the match was halted after UTEP secured the point.
The Miners then turned to courts 1 and 6 to extend the advantage pushing the lead to 3-0. Lamar was looking to cut into the advantage at No. 2 and 3 singles. Freshman
Asta Miettinen won her opening and took a 4-3 lead in the second while junior
Megan Do was headed to an opening-set tiebreak against UTEP's Paloma Hennicaux. Unfortunately, both matches were halted when the Miners scoring the fourth and final point at No. 5 singles.
The Cardinals return to action Saturday, Feb. 22
nd when they travel to Nacogodoches, Texas to take on Arkansas State. The match against the Red Wolves is set for a 2 p.m. start from the Schlief Tennis Complex.
