PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Lamar University senior receiver/punt returner
Kyndon Fuselier has been named Southland Conference and STATS Perform National Special Teams Player of the Week for his efforts in the Cardinals' seven-point victory over Nicholls Saturday in Beaumont. It marks the third time in his career, and the second-straight week that Fuselier has received the honor.
It also marks the sixth time this year that LU has had a player named to the All-Southland squad and the fourth consecutive week Lamar has received the Southland Special Teams honor (Lamar was not eligible for the honor during their bye week).
It also marks the first time Lamar has received a national player of the week honor since
Bailey Giffen (kicker) in 2019.
Fuselier, who currently leads the SLC in punt return average (26.4), put his skills are full display in Saturday's conference-opening win over Nicholls. The Nederland, Texas native returned four punts for 104 yards with a touchdown. The touchdown proved to be the game winner and came late in the contest. With less than four minutes to play, Fuselier fielded a punt on his own 12-yard line broke two tackles and returned the ball 88 yards for the score.
Fuselier currently ranks second nationally in punt return average, is one of just 21 athletes at the NCAA FCS level to have returned a punt for a touchdown this season and is currently tied for first in school history with two career returns for scores. His 88-yard return was just two yards shy of a school record and is currently the longest return in the Southland this season.
Fuselier, and the Cardinals, return to action Saturday when they travel to Commerce, Texas to take on East Texas A&M.
