Lamar, UIW Set for Showdown in the Alamo City

| By:
BEAUMONT, Texas – The 14th-ranked Lamar University Cardinals travel to San Antonio Saturday looking to remain atop the Southland Conference standings. When Lamar steps on the field at UIW – the league's other Cardinals – it will be a showdown of the Southland's preseason favorites against the current co-leaders in Lamar.

The good guys bring with them a ton of momentum riding a seven-game win streak – the program's longest since the 1971 and 1972 seasons and currently sit in a three-way tie for the league lead (7-1/4-0 SLC). The Cardinals travel to San Antonio looking to tie the single-season school record for wins (as a four-year institution).

For UIW, the defending conference champions, it has not been the season they expected. Opening the year No. 5 in the preseason polls, San Antonio's version of the Cardinals opened the year with a 20-6 loss at Nicholls and have been unable to string together consecutive wins this season. Despite the struggles, UIW (2-6/0-4 SLC) has picked up some big wins on the season. UIW bounced back from their season-opening loss, and appeared to right the ship, with a 10-point victory over Eastern Washington, and then thumped Abilene Christian, who is currently ranked 24th nationally, by 31 points just a couple weeks later.

The Cardinals are traveling to a venue that quite simply has not been very kind to the Red and White. Lamar is just 4-7 (.364) all-time against UIW with just one of those wins coming in San Antonio (2015).

Saturday's game is set for a 2 p.m. kick off from Gayle and Tom Benson Stadium. It will be broadcast live on Newstalk 560 KLVI and streamed live on ESPN+.

Series History: Lamar trails, 4-7

LU vs. the Cardinals
The Cardinals trail the all-time series against UIW which originated during the 2011 season. Lamar is 4-7 (.364) all-time against the league's other Cardinals, with only one of those wins coming in San Antonio (2015). All of UIW's wins in the series have come recently winning five straight and seven of the last eight. Lamar enters the week looking for its first win since 2018.

Going Streaking
Saturday's win is LU's seventh consecutive, marking the Cardinals longest win streak since winning seven between the 1971 and 1972 seasons. A win Saturday would equal the program's longest since it won nine straight between the 1958 and 1959 seasons.

Best Start Since ...
A win Saturday at UIW would give the Cardinals their best start to a season since 1957 when LU went 8-0-2 on the year. It would also be the first time in program history (as a four-year institution) that Lamar has opened a year 5-0 in conference play (conference records were not tracked during its seasons as a junior college program).

Winning Record
Lamar's victory Saturday at Northwestern State assured the program of no worse than a winning record this season - the third straight under head coach Pete Rossomando. It's the first time the Cardinals have recorded three-straight winning seasons since 1965-67. A win Saturday would give LU eight for the season tying a single-season school record (as a four-year institution). The overall record is 10 which came during the 1949 season when Lamar was a junior college program.

Fast Track
LU head coach Pete Rossomando entered the 2025 season with the most wins of any Lamar head coach after two seasons. Despite being just past the midway point of his third season, he already has more wins (20) than any previous LU head coach after their first four seasons.
