Cardinals, Privateers Set for Monday Night Showdown

| By:
BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University will have to prove it has a short-term memory Monday with New Orleans coming to town as the Cardinals (9-7/4-1 SLC) will look to bounce back from a disappointing home loss Saturday evening. Despite the setback, the Cardinals roll into Monday having won eight of their previous 10 and currently sit in a three-way tie for second in the Southland standings just a game back of McNeese.

While Lamar is looking to rebound from a disappointing outing, UNO heads to the Golden Triangle looking to bounce back from a disappointing first half of the season. The Privateers appeared to be a potential conference threat after an impressive win over Tulane in November but things haven't gone their way since. The Privateers have dropped 10 straight since their win over Tulane and are one of two schools still looking for their first conference win of the season (2-14, 0-5 SLC).

Unfortunately, history is not on Lamar's side in this series. While the Cardinals have won three straight and four of the previous six in the series, LU trails the all-time series, 32-11 (.744). That mark includes a 6-15 (.286) LU record in Beaumont.

Monday's game is slated for a 7 p.m. tipoff from the Neches Federal Credit Union Arena at the Montagne Center. It will be broadcast live on Newstalk KLVI and streamed live on ESPN+.

Series History vs. the Privateers: Lamar trails, 32-11

LU vs. the Privateers
The series between Lamar and New Orleans dates back to the 1976-77 season and has been one that has heavily favored the Privateers. The Cards trail the all-time series, 11-32 (.256), a mark which includes a 6-15 (.286) tally in Beaumont. While UNO has had the upper hand in the series, Lamar has started to flip the script winning all three games last year.

Defending the Nest
Lamar has made the Neches Federal Credit Union Arena at the Montagne Center one of the toughest venues for opponents to play over the course of its 30-plus year history. The Cardinals are 375-190 (.663) all-time in Neches Arena. LU recorded a program-best 15 home wins in the 1987-88 season and is 5-2 (.714) at home this year.

LU in January
The Cardinals are 296-284 (.510) all-time in the month of January. LU has produced above .500 records in the month 32 times in program history which includes three perfect records (1965-66, 1968-69 and 1987-88). That win percentage jumps when looking at home games. The Cards are 206-108 (.656) all-time at home in the year's first month.

Double-Double
Senior Ja'Sean Jackson recorded a unique double-double Monday in the Cardinals' victory over UIW. The San Antonio native scored 15 points and led all players with 10 assists. It is the first double-double of his career and the fourth time this season a Cardinal has recorded one. It's also the first time a Cardinal had recorded 10 assists in a game since Chris Pryor last season. Jackson is currently second in the Southland averaging 4.5 assists per game. Jackson leads the league in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.8).

Downeaster Alexis
Junior guard Alexis Marmolejos is one of the top newcomers in the Southland Conference. He has scored in double figures in all but three games for the Cardinals this season, which includes four 20-point outings. He currently ranks fifth in the Southland averaging 15.3 points per game. A native of the Dominican Republic, Marmolejos is also one of the Southland Conference's top three-point shooters. He currently ranks second in the league in three-point field goal percentage (.394) and is tied for third in the conference averaging 2.3 triples per game.

Action Jackson
Senior Ja'Sean Jackson is putting together the best season of his collegiate career. He is currently second on the team and ranks among the league's top 20 in scoring (11.8 ppg), he is second in the conference in assists (4.4 apg), tops in the SLC in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.3) and is tied for second in steals (1.9).

The Great Wall of Beaumont
Lamar enters the week boasting two of the league's top five shot blockers. Junior Andrew Holifield is currently tied for second averaging 1.9 blocks per game while senior Adam Hamilton is tied for fourth (1.5 per game). As a team, the Cardinals currently lead the Southland averaging 4.81 blocks per game. That is the 39th-best mark nationally.

The Cardinal Rule
LU has been one of the Southland Conference's more dominant teams. LU has won 53 percent of league games and has more NCAA tournament appearances than any of the current SLC schools (6), and their five NIT berths are also tops in the league. LU has had 84 players earn All-SLC honors, including 32 first-team selections. Six players have been named league newcomer of the year, five SLC tournament MVPs, four SLC Players of the Year, two freshmen of the year and a defensive player of the year.
