BEAUMONT, Texas - Lamar University gained some momentum and got back in the win column Sunday evening thanks to two first half goals from Kaitlyn Niemeyer, as the Cardinals knocked off Texas Southern 4-1. The sophomore from Argyle tallied two goals in a four minute span in the first half to help LU earn their second win of the season
A substitute at the start of the match, Niemeyer's two goals were part of a three-shot night, which was tied for second on the team with another goal scorer in Anneliese Switzer. Mariana Cardenas also scored her first goal of the season in the match with her only shot for the night while Taylor Conway posted a team-high four shots. Cena Carlson assisted on two goals while Riley Wilson assisted on Niemeyer's first goal. Both Taylor Howard and Maddie Rich participated in goal and would combine for three saves on nine shots.
The Tigers would come out of the gates outshooting LU 5-2, but LU responded with 12 of the next 13 shots for the remainder of the half. After 31 of scoreless soccer, Niemeyer took over by scoring her first two goals of her career in the 33rd and 36th minutes to put LU up 2-0 at the break.
As the second half began, Switzer would find the back of the net for her first goal of the season off of a scramble following a corner kick, making it 3-0. But the moment of euphoria was short-lived as the Tigers broke the shutout three minutes after to close within 3-1. Despite the goal allowed, LU's defense kept the Tigers to just two more shots. The defensive effort would be rewarded in the 86th minute, as Cardenas iced the win with her first career goal for the final margin.
LU returns to the LU Soccer Complex Thursday when they host UL Lafayette. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
