BEAUMONT, Texas - The Lamar women's soccer team held a lead for 85 minutes, but Louisiana scored a goal in the 86th minute to equalize the match as both teams would play to a 1-1 tie Thursday evening at the LU Soccer Complex.
The Cardinals edged out ULL 16-15 in the shots category.
Kamryn Harvey (six) and
Taylor Conway (two) combined for half of the shots. LU's goal came from
Cena Carlson, who recorded her first collegiate goal in the 11th minute on an assist from
Trinity Clark.
LU goalkeeper
Maddie Rich picked up five saves for the Cardinals.
The Cardinals took command of the game from the opening kick. After three shots in the first 10 minutes, Big Red broke through with Carlson firing a shot from outside the box that tipped off the ULL keeper's hands and into the net. LU then created a surge of chances to extend its lead, but couldn't capitalize. By halftime, the Cardinals had outshot ULL 9-6 and kept their 1-0 lead.
For the first 30 minutes of the second half, LU's momentum continued as it would string together six shots. Once the 80th minute arrived, ULL suddenly began to go on the offensive. Six minutes later, the Ragin Cajuns found the back of the net for the tying goal. In the final seconds, ULL had a chance to win, but the shot was off-target and the Cardinals exited the field with the tie.
The Cardinals open Southland Conference play Sept. 22 at Stephen F. Austin (7 p.m.)
