Ramirez Strikes Twice in Shutout Win Over Nicholls

BEAUMONT, Texas – Led by Isela Ramirez's first two goals of the season, Lamar University's soccer team exploded for four goals and earned their first conference win on the season, toppling Nicholls 4-0 on Sunday afternoon at the LU Soccer Complex.

Ramirez scored on both of her shot attempts to record her first multi-goal game since 2021 against Alcorn. Also scoring for the Cardinals were Anneliese Switzer and Ronke Abudu while Rafiatu Alhassan, Ella Carmody, Kamryn Harvey, Riley Wilson, Caragan Childs, and Reese Carmody each recorded an assist. Maddie Rich would spend 80 minutes in goal recording five saves while Taylor Howard came on in relief in the final 10 minutes to preserve the shutout.

LU got the scoring started early, taking a 1-0 lead in the fourth minute with Ramirez's first goal on assists from Alhassan and Carmody. The Cardinals took command of the half by outshooting Nicholls 7-3 while Rich stepped up to make three saves. With 25 seconds left in the half, Harvey and Wilson exchanged passes before feeding Switzer to score the match's second goal.

Ramirez scored her second less than two minutes into the second half, poking a shot past the diving Nicholls keeper off of a free kick from Childs. The Cardinals carried their momentum from the goal and fired nine shots. Nicholls would get seven chances but were unable to break through. Over the final minutes, LU brought in some of its reserves to play. Two newcomers combined for the final goal, as Reese Carmody, making her Cardinals' debut, connected with Abudu to end the match, 4-0. LU outshot Nicholls 18-10 in the match.

The Cardinals will make the road trip east to Hammond, La., to take on Southeastern Louisiana Friday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
