HAMMOND, La. - Southeastern Louisiana was able to score early in both halves and hold off a furious Lamar rally, earning a 2-1 win in Southland Conference play on Friday night.
Rafiatu Alhassan scored in the 78th minute and had two more chances just miss as Lamar dropped to 3-6-3 and 1-2-1 in SLC, while Southeastern Louisiana moved to 4-5-1 and 3-1-0.
LU was outshot by the Lions 9-8 as Alhassan had a team-high three shots while
Kaitlyn Niemeyer posted two.
Maddie Rich had one save on nine shots faced in the match.
Early on, Rich made her presence known with a save in the seventh minute. Two minutes later, the Lions got on the board first from their leading scorer in Hannah McCord. LU was outshot 5-3 in the first half.
Leading 1-0 after the break, the Lions extended that lead with a goal from Nicole O'Neill nine minutes into the second half. The Cardinals then picked up the offensive pressure and it was in the 78th minute that Alhassan broke through and scored to put LU on the board. She later had two chances to equalize in the 83rd minute, but was unable to capitalize. The Lions held on in the final minutes to preserve the 2-1 win.

Big Red returns to the LU Soccer Complex next Friday when they host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
