BEAUMONT, Texas - The Lamar University women's soccer team used two first-half goals from
Kamryn Harvey and
Rafiatu Alhassan to spark a 2-1 victory over Sam Houston on Thursday night at the LU Soccer Complex. This win marks the 150th in program history dating back to 2007.
Of the 13 shots fired by the Cardinals, Harvey and
Arely Alaniz (assist) were each responsible for three shots, which was only second behind four from
Cena Carlson (assist). Alhassan's goal was her lone shot attempt while
Taylor Conway picked up two shots.
Maddie Rich spent all 90 minutes in net earning a career-high seven saves on 15 shots from the Bearkats.
For the first 27 minutes of the match, both teams combined for five shots. Then, in the 28th minute, LU struck its first goal from Harvey, who headed in an assist from Carlson. Six minutes later, another header gave the Cardinals a 2-0 lead with Alhassan scoring on a pass by Alaniz. Rich would pick up three saves to keep the shutout intact going into halftime.
The Bearkats broke the shutout 10 minutes into the second half to close within 2-1. SHSU had some chances late to equalize with one opportunity hitting the crossbar in the 67th minute. Despite spending most of the second half on their side of the field, Rich and the Cardinals fended off the Bearkats' multiple offensive attacks and preserved the 2-1 win.
The Cardinals will set their focus on a Thursday road matchup against South Alabama. This contest will start at 7:00 p.m. and be played at The Cage.
