Defense Shines in Midweek Scrimmage

| By:
BEAUMONT, Tex as – With the first day of classes set to begin Thursday, the Lamar University football team took to the field Wednesday evening for a midweek scrimmage. Lamar's defense took center stage at Provost Umphrey Stadium picking off five passes, recording a sack to go along with several stops at or behind the line of scrimmage.

"It's always good to get turnovers. That's the most important part of defense – third down defense and getting turnovers," said LU head coach Pete Rossomando following the scrimmage. "We did a pretty good job of making sure we did that today.

"We also hit a lot of special teams' situations, things you are going to see in a game that you just don't do every day in practice. You do punt, you do kickoff return but you don't always do hands team some or those onside kick things. We wanted to practice that with pads on today and we got the opportunity to get through all of that."

The Cardinals five interceptions came from five different players as freshman Nicholas Brown, junior Jaden Harding, junior DeJuan Lewis, freshman Jordan James and junior Brayden Faulkner each stole a possession for the defense. Harding also batted a second pass away later in the scrimmage.

Unfortunately, each LU quarterback ended the night with an interception to their stat line as they finished the scrimmage18-of-33 (.545) for 242 yards two touchdowns as a group, with junior Jakolby Longino tacking on a third via the rush.

The Cardinals carried the ball 32 times for 163 yards (5.1 ypc) and two scores. Senior Khalan Griffin carried the ball five times for 50 yards while Damien Moore had three carries for 52 yards on the night.
