BEAUMONT, Texas – Fresh off leading the Lamar University baseball team to its first Southland Conference regular-season title since 2004 and earning his first SLC Coach of the Year honor, LU has signed head coach
Will Davis to a four-year extension carrying the Cardinals' skipper through the 2028 season.
"I could not be more excited to announce that
Will Davis will be with Lamar University for the next four seasons," said Director of Athletics Jeff O'Malley. "He is one of the top young coaches in the country who continues to produce quality young men on the field and in the classroom. We are proud of what Will has been able to accomplish here and we couldn't be more excited about the future of the program under his leadership."
The school's second all-time winningest coach, Davis' troops recorded one of the best seasons in Lamar history this past season. The Cardinals won 44 games (44-15/.746) on the way to their first conference regular-season title since 2004 (and the 11
th in program history).
The 2024 season saw LU post a 13-game win streak to open the month of March which was the longest in the nation at the time, and after that streak was snapped the Cardinals responded by traveling to Norman, Okla., and sweeping the No. 25 Oklahoma Sooners. The hot start would eventually see the Cardinals land in the College Baseball Nation, Baseball America and Perfect Game Top 25 polls.
The Cardinals also ranked among the nation's elite in several pitching categories this season and ended the regular season leading the nation in earned run average and WHIP.
The top-seeded Cardinals advanced to the Southland Conference semifinals and would end the year with seven individuals on the all-conference squads including
Brooks Caple who was named SLC Pitcher of the Year (which comes one year after 2023 MLB Draft selection
Ryan Snell was named league player of the year).
"In the last few years, we've been able to move the program forward with more wins, more players graduating, higher attendance and a championship," said Davis. "I look forward to continuing to build on something special with Director of Athletics Jeff O'Malley and Lamar President Dr. Jaime Taylor."
In addition to Davis' coach of the year award, he also produced two all-region players this season and Caple was named third-team All-America by Baseball America. Caple was also named to the National Pitcher of the Year watch list, while
Andres Perez and
Austin Neal were named to the NCBWA Stopper of the Year watch list and
Kanin Dodge was a candidate for the Brooks Wallace Award.
