Tate Named Southland Conference Male Athlete of the Year

FRISCO, Texas - Seventeen athletes from Lamar University's track and field teams have been named to the 2024 Outdoor Track and Field All-Southland Conference teams announced league officials Tuesday afternoon. Headlining the Cardinals were male athlete of the year Kenson Tate and women's outstanding running events performer Brianna Howard.
 
Tate earned first-team honors by claiming his second gold medal in the men's long jump (7.85m-25'9.25"). He followed that up with qualifications in both the NCAA West Regionals (4th; 7.84m-25'8.25") and the NCAA Outdoor Championships (12th; 7.56m-24'9.75"), where he earned second-team All-American honors.
 
Howard won three gold medals and earned first-team honors in the 100 meters (11.36), 200m (23.01) and the 4x100m (44.83), along with Kayli Johnson, Sydne Porter, and Kayla Smith. Reaching the NCAA West Regionals, she broke the school and SLC 200m record at 22.87 to advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships. There, she was an honorable mention All-America as she finished 20th at 23.10.
 
Along with her first-team selection in the 4x100m relay, Johnson earned second team honors in the 100m hurdles and third team in the long jump. Porter also joined Howard on the 100m all-conference team earning second while Smith became a third teamer in the 4x400m along with Faith Outing, Adebola Odunlami and Chloe Rodriguez, who was tabbed the 400mh first teamer.
 
Nia Clatworthy also became a recipient of two all-conference honors earning first team in the 5,000m and second team in the 10,000m while her cross country teammate Cara Inch took home third-team honors in the 5,000m and 1,500m along with Freddy Richardson on the men's side. Jacarrius Demmerritte brought in his second triple jump second-team honor. Earning her first all-conference honor in the heptathlon was Clemence Varin, who became a third teamer.
 
The men's 4x400m relay team of Cameron Chin, Ethan Ellis, Christian Johnson, and Jaylon Roberts were tabbed as third teamers in the event. Ellis also added a second-team honoree in the 400m hurdles.
 
By the end of the conference championship meet, the women earned third place overall with 118.5 points while the men placed fifth overall (71 points). Along with Howard and Tate, Clatworthy, Ellis, Rodriguez, and Elijah Jackson qualified for the NCAA West Regionals.
