BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University has one more non-conference midweek contest remaining on the docket before returning to conference play looking to win a Southland Conference regular-season title. That contest will take place Tuesday evening against Alcorn State.
The Cardinals head into the final week of the regular season with a 38-12 (.760) overall record having won eight of their last 12 outings. Big Red has posted a 23-6 record in non-conference games this season, a mark which includes a sweep of nationally ranked Oklahoma. Lamar will also be playing this game in front of their home fans where they have been nearly unbeatable in 2024. Lamar is 23-4 (.851) at home this season.
It has been a tough season for Alcorn State. The Braves have posted a 6-39 (.133) record on the year but come to Beaumont with signs of turning things around. The Braves have split their last four games which includes wins against Southern and Texas Southern. In those two victories Alcorn combined for 21 runs.
Tuesday's game will also be a matchup of two pitching staff at the complete opposite ends of the spectrum. Lamar is entering its second week of leading the nation in earned run average (3.31) and has ranked among the nation's leaders all season. Alcorn currently ranks 295 of 295 teams in ERA (12.10).
Tuesday's meeting would mark just the second all-time between the two schools. Lamar defeated the Braves, 11-2, last season in Beaumont.
Tuesday's midweek will serve as the final non-conference game for both teams as Alcorn will travel to Prairie View A&M to close out the regular season, while Big Red heads to the Big Easy looking to wrap up a Southland Conference regular season title. Regardless of what happens on the field Tuesday, Lamar will carry a 1.0-game lead into their final conference series.
Tuesday's game is slated for a 6 p.m. start from Vincent-Beck Stadium and will be streamed live on ESPN+.
