SAN ANTONIO, Texas – It was a tough afternoon for the shorthanded Lamar University women's tennis team Saturday in San Antonio. The Cardinals took on the Southland's other Cardinals – UIW – on the road, but it was UIW that got the upper hand posting a 5-2 victory.
Trailing 1-0 early, the Cardinals got straight-set victories from
Martina Alcaino at No. 5 singles and
Saloni Tamang at No. 6 to tie the match up at 2. Alcaino defeated UIW's McKenzy Byfield, 6-0, 6-2, at the No. 5 position, followed by Tamang's 6-2, 6-2, victory over Jordyn Isaak at No. 6.
Senior
Elena Rubio took the first set of her match on court three but the match was forced to a third set. Unfortunately, UIW managed to escape that match with a win and took victories on the remaining courts for the final score.
The Cardinals (9-12/2-4 SLC) return to action Monday when they travel to Corpus Christi, Texas to take on Southland co-leaders Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The match against the Islanders will begin at 11 a.m.
