UIW Escapes Beaumont with Victory

BEAUMONT, Texas – The UIW Cardinals came to Beaumont, Texas with a 16-3 overall record and a perfect mark in Southland Conference play, but Lamar University pushed the league's other Cardinals – and SLC co-leaders – right down to the bitter end. When it was all said and done UIW recorded the 4-3 victory to remain undefeated in conference play.

Although the overall score was close, the match was even closer when you breakdown each individual court. The match consisted of a three-set decision, which Lamar won, and three sets that went to a tiebreak. Unfortunately, Lamar was victorious in only one of the three tiebreak sets.

The two teams were evenly split in singles play making the deciding factor of the match the doubles points. Court three went to a third set, but before that match could be decided UIW had already earned the point.

UIW increased its lead to 3-0 before Lamar rallied. The good guys picked up their first victory of the day at court No. 2 from junior Max Amling. After dropping the first set to UIW's Emilio Vila, Amling came storming back to take the second set and eventually the match, 3-6, 6-0, 6-3.

The Cardinals would also get wins from Joan Crespo (No. 6 singles) and Martin Garcia-Ripoll (No. 1) but could not come up with the fourth and final point.

Things don't get any easier for the Red and White as they will now have to prepare for Texas A&M-Corpus Christi – the Southland's other undefeated team. The match against the Islanders is Thursday, April 11th in Corpus Christi.
