Cardinals Fall Twice Against Lions

HAMMOND, La. – Lamar University dropped the first two games of their final conference series of the season against Southeastern Louisiana on Friday. Nine fielding errors between the two contests plagued the Cardinals in the 9-1 and 8-0 defeats.

Trinity Brandon recorded an RBI single in Game 1 which was her first game back from injury. Emma Wardlaw got tagged with the loss in a complete game effort allowing nine runs (four earned) on 12 hits with two strikeouts.

Veronica Harrison went 2-for-2 for the Cardinals in Game 2 with Brandon and Makenzie Wright also recording hits. Karyana Mitchell picked a complete game in the loss allowing eight runs (five earned) on 12 hits and a walk with two strikeouts.

Game 1: Southeastern Louisiana 9, LU 1

The Cardinals got off to a fast start in Game 1 as Brandon reached on an infield single and knocked in Shenita Tucker to give LU an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. A double play in the bottom of the first would stop the Lions from scoring with runners on first and second.

SLU broke through in the bottom of the second, however, as five Cardinal fielding errors resulted in five runs for the Lions to flip the script in the game. They would add runs in the third and fourth innings to extend their lead with two RBI singles in the bottom of the fifth giving the Lions a run-rule victory.

Game 2: Southeastern Louisiana 8, LU 0

The Lions started quickly in Game 2 as they scored four two-out runs in the top of the second while capitalizing on two Cardinal errors. They would tack on another in the bottom of the third to extend their lead to five.

The best chance for Big Red to score came in the top of the fourth with runners at the corners but neither were able to come across in the frame. The Lions would add three more runs in the fourth and fifth innings to finish things off.

LU returns home for their final game of the regular season against Tarleton on Wednesday at 5 p.m. at the LU Softball Complex.
