BEAUMONT, Texas – Just two days after having their nation's long win streak (13 games) snapped at Houston, the Lamar University baseball team started a new streak at No. 25 Oklahoma by sweeping all three games of the series. Winners in 16 of their last 17, the Cardinals (22-5) will look to keep their current streak alive in a midweek game against a very tough Sam Houston squad.
A strong history between the two schools, as Lamar and SHSU were long-time rivals in the Southland Conference and Western Athletic Conferences, the Bearkats now represent the Mountain West Conference. Sporting a 17-12 (.586) overall record, the Bearkats have had their own share of success against the Big 12 with a series victory at Oklahoma State to open the year and a midweek win at Baylor. Sam Houston also traveled to College Station, Texas last month and dropped a one-run decision to the No. 4 A&M Aggies, 9-8.
The contest against Sam Houston marks the end of an eight-game road swing as Big Red will now be home for eight consecutive – a place where LU has been extremely tough on opponents. The Cardinals are 10-1 (.909) at home this year and haven't lost in Vincent-Beck in a month.
The contest against Sam Houston also marks the first meeting between the two schools since 2022.
Lamar's pitching staff continues to lead the Southland Conference despite coming off a three-game series against one of the nation's top teams. The Cardinals enter the new week with a league-leading 3.72 earned run average through 237 innings pitched. Big Red is holding opponents to a Southland low .215 batting average with 222 strikeouts on the year. LU has also recorded 11 saves which is tops in the conference.
Offensively, Lamar is hitting .275 on the season with 25 home runs and 153 RBIs. The Red and White scored 31 runs during the three games at Oklahoma on 31 hits and mashed seven home runs.
The Cardinals have three players hitting .290 or better on the season and three hitting over the .300 mark. Senior River Orsk leads the squad with a .360 average (1.043 OPS) with six home runs and 26 runs batted. Orsak is second to only
Brayden Evans for home runs on the season.
Tuesday's contest is set for a 6 p.m. first pitch. It will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
