BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University faced some hard luck Saturday afternoon in its rivalry match against league-leading McNeese. Not only were the Cardinals taking on the league leading and undefeated (in conference play) McNeese Cowgirls, but Lamar also had to overcome an injury to one of their top players early in the contest. McNeese eventually picked up a 6-1 victory at the Thompson Family Tennis Center.
The Cardinals' No. 2 doubles tandem of
Nouray Metwally and
Natalia Turczuk were forced to make an early exit as Turczuk went down with an injury forcing an end to the match on court 2. It also meant that McNeese needed only one doubles win to take the doubles point.
McNeese eventually got that doubles victory taking the momentum into singles. The Cardinals were now forced to adjust their singles lineup moving their No. 6 up to the fifth spot and No. 7 up to court 6 because of the injury.
Unfortunately, it was too much to overcome as the Cardinals managed just one singles victory which came from freshman
Marika Mueller. She defeated Aina Domingo, 7-6 (8-6), 6-3, for LU's lone win.
The Cardinals (9-9/2-2 SLC) will look to get back in the win column Monday when they host Southeastern Louisiana. The match against SLU will begin at 1 p.m. from the Thompson Family Tennis Center.
