BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University dropped the doubles point and three three-set matches Friday to fall to Nicholls, 6-1, at the Thompson Family Tennis Center. The loss moves Lamar to 6-10 on the season and 0-1 to start Southland Conference play.
The Cardinals won the opening match of the day – No. 1 doubles – but Nicholls responded with four consecutive wins to build a 3-0 lead with four matches remaining. The Cardinals' duo of
Max Amling and
Leon Nickel defeated Nicholls' Omar Morsy and Quentin Lamothe, 6-1, but the Cardinals were unable to capitalize on the momentum as Nicholls took the point with wins on courts 2 and 3.
Down a point, the Cardinals appeared to flip the momentum on their guests as they took opening-set victories on four of the next six singles courts. Unfortunately, Big Red walked away with just one victory as the Colonels rallied for three-set winners on courts 1, 2 and 6 for the overall win.
The Cardinals lone point came from senior
Brandon Do on court 4. The Nederland, Texas, native, ousted Nicholls' Danail Banov, 6-3, 6-4.
The Cardinals will now have to turn their attention to a doubleheader against Prairie View A&M Tuesday. The first match of the doubleheader will begin at 10 a.m. from the Thompson Family Tennis Center.
