COMMERCE, Texas – Lamar University softball took care of business in their series finale against Texas A&M-Commerce on Saturday with a 5-0 victory to push their current win streak to five. They also maintained sole possession of first place in the Southland Conference.
Neither team had much going offensively as both found themselves engaged in a pitcher's duel.
Emma Wardlaw kept the Cardinals in the game early allowing just three baserunners in the first five innings for the Lions.
LU finally broke through in the top of the sixth as
Trinity Brandon sent an RBI double to left center which plated
Kalyn Xayaseng and advanced her to third on the throw. She then was able to score on a wild pitch in the next at-bat to give the Cardinals a 2-0 lead.
The Cardinals added some insurance runs in the top of the seventh to finish things off as
Aubrey Brown beat the throw home on an infield single from
Kalie Amos for the first run of the inning.
Roxy Thompson then scored on a fielding error by the Lions before
Rose Gonzales notched her first RBI of the season to make it a five-run advantage.
Big Red took advantage of three Lion errors to help with the scoring load. Brandon (RBI, 2B) logged her third straight game with a double while Amos and Gonzales also batted in runs. Wardlaw got the start for LU and picked up the win on the mound lasting 5.1 scoreless innings allowing just two hits, a walk and a HBP with five strikeouts.
Karyana Mitchell, fresh off her no-hitter on Friday, came in and pitched a hitless 1.2 innings of relief with a strikeout to push her streak of batters faced without a hit to 34.
