Cardinals Take I-10 Showdown, Match Win Total from Last Season

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Despite falling behind early, Lamar University softball continued to roll as they knocked off UTSA 4-2 in an I-10 showdown on Tuesday in San Antonio. This was the Cardinals' sixth straight victory and their 22nd win of the season which matches their total from last year.

It took one pitch for UTSA to take the lead as a leadoff home run gave the Roadrunners the lead in the bottom of the first. The Cardinals would load the bases in the top of the second but failed to bring any runners around. UTSA would tag on another run in the bottom of the second on a fielding error from LU.

Big Red would break through in the top of the third on an RBI double from Cameron Niedenthal which just missed leaving the ballpark. Two pitches later, Veronica Harrison did just that by launching her second home run of the season to left field to give LU a 3-2 lead. Jayne Sepulveda added an RBI single in the top of the fourth to extend the Cardinal lead.

The Cardinals looked to add to their advantage in the top of the sixth as they again loaded the bases but left three runners on. The extra run support was not necessary, however, as Karyana Mitchell retired the final 14 batters she faced to help LU hold on and secure the road win.

The top seven batters in the lineup for the Cardinals all recorded a hit with Harrison (2 RBI, HR), Niedenthal (2B) and Sepulveda each batting in a run. Mitchell earned the complete game victory allowing just two runs (one earned) on six hits with seven strikeouts.

LU returns home on Thursday as they square off with Nicholls for a conference showdown at the LU Softball Complex. The first game of the series will take place Thursday at 5:30 p.m. with the final two games on Friday at 1 and 3 p.m. All three games can be streamed on ESPN+.
