BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University and NJIT split singles with each team winning three matches, but the Highlanders had the advantage in doubles competition and that was the difference in the match as NJIT escaped Beaumont with a 4-3 victory.
"Obviously, we're disappointed with a loss but I'm very proud of this team today," said LU head coach
David Wong. "These young ladies put up one heck of a fight today."
The Highlanders took all three doubles matches for the point, which was the pivotal moment of the day. As the two teams switched to singles, NJIT pushed its lead to 2-0 with a victory at No. 4 singles, but the Cardinals fought right back.
Freshmen
Natalia Turczuk and
Nouray Metwally tied the match up with victories at Nos. 5 and 6 singles. Sophomore
Megan Do gave the Red and White their first lead of the day with a 7-5, 6-1, victory over Sofia Pinedo, 7-5, 6-1 at No. 3 singles.
Do put Lamar in position of needing just one more victory in the final two matches – both of which went to third set – but the Cardinals struggled to close out the day.
Lamar now turns its attention to a Sunday match at UT Rio Grande Valley. The match against the Vaqueros will begin at 10 a.m.
