Cardinals Drop Two Against No. 13 Baylor

WACO, Texas – Lamar University softball came home empty in a road doubleheader at No. 13 Baylor on Tuesday. LU (15-9, 3-0 SLC) scored late in a 5-1 Game 1 loss before shuffling the lineup around in a 6-1 Game 2 defeat.

Six starters for the Cardinals tallied hits in Game 1 with Raigan Brannon knocking in the only run for LU on an RBI double in a 5-1 defeat. Sabrina Jolin went the distance on the mound while getting tagged with the loss allowing five runs on nine hits and three walks with a strikeout.

Trinity Brandon produced an RBI groundout in the third inning of Game 2 while Shenita Tucker recorded another steal to get her to 19 on the season. Madison Guidry started the game on the mound and went for two innings allowing five runs (three earned) on seven hits and a walk. Makayla Valle took over in the third inning and managed the final four innings work allowing just one run on three hits and a walk with two strikeouts.

Game 1: Baylor 5, LU 1

Jolin managed to hold the Bears at bay through two innings including getting out of a jam in the second with runners on second and third. Baylor was able to break through in the bottom of the third, however, with four runs on five hits. They then got another in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI single.

LU managed to get on the board in the top the seventh as three consecutive hits capped by a RBI double from Brannon cut into the deficit. A pitching change back to the starter would finish things off for the Bears though.

Game 2: Baylor 6, LU 1

The Cardinals were able to get two runners on to start the game but failed to bring any runs across the plate in the top of the first. Baylor capitalized with three runs in the opening inning and two more in the second to get out in front early.

Big Red would score in the top of the third on an RBI groundout from Brandon which preceded six straight retired batters from Valle to keep it a four-run game through four innings. The Bears would push their lead back to five, however, with an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth and hold onto the win from there.

LU returns home this weekend for a conference series against Northwestern State. The series will start with a Friday doubleheader featuring games at 3 and 5 p.m. with the finale coming on Saturday at 12 p.m. All games will take place at the LU Softball Complex and can be streamed on ESPN+.
