Cardinals Earn First Walk-off Win; Game 2 to Resume Tomorrow

BEAUMONT, Texas – An undefeated start to conference play continued for Lamar University softball as they snagged their first walk-off victory of the season in a 6-5 thriller over Northwestern State on Friday. Weather cut Game 2 short with play to resume at 10 a.m. tomorrow with the series finale following approximately 30 minutes after the end of Game 2.

Jayne Sepulveda led the Cardinals with two hits and scored the walk-off run on a passed ball in a 6-5 Game 1 victory. Makenzie Wright (RBI) mashed her first career home run while Trinity Brandon, Cameron Niedenthal and Brooke Davis each batted in a run as well. Emma Wardlaw got the start on the mound and lasted four innings allowing five runs on seven hits with three strikeouts. Karyana Mitchell came in and recorded the win with three innings of scoreless relief on just three hits.

Game 1: LU 6, Northwestern State 5

Both teams found themselves unable to do much early until LU broke through in the bottom of the third with a two-RBI single from Brandon and sacrifice fly from Niedenthal. NSU answered back in the top of the fourth with three runs of their own with two outs, but Wright then came up big with her first career home run in the bottom of the fourth to go back in front.

The Demons managed two more runs in the top of the fifth to retake the lead and stranded Cardinal runners in the next two innings to maintain their advantage. Big Red was then able to load the bases in the bottom of the seventh and scored the tying run on a groundout from Davis. Sepulveda then was able to score on a passed ball to secure Lamar's first walk-off win of the season.

Game 2 will resume at 10 a.m. tomorrow in the top of the fifth with NSU leading 2-0.
