BEAUMONT, Texas – Coming off a successful start to conference play, Lamar University softball will look to ride their current momentum into a midweek doubleheader at Baylor on Tuesday with games at 4 and 6:30 p.m. Both games will be streamed on ESPN+.
LAST TIME OUT
The Cardinals enjoyed a weekend sweep to open their Southland slate as they took care of business in three games against Houston Christian. The weekend featured the team's first two come-from-behind victories both buoyed by freshmen performances.
Emma Wardlaw came out on top in a 2-1 pitcher's duel in Game 1 on Saturday before
Veronica Harrison slapped a go-ahead two-RBI single to left field in the top of the seventh inning of Sunday's finale for a 4-3 LU win.
KEY STORYLINES
LU has been on a hot streak as of late having won 12 of their last 13 games. They are off to their first 3-0 conference start under head coach
Amy Hooks and are enjoying their best overall start to a season since the program was resurrected in 2013.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Harrison enjoyed the best weekend of her young Cardinal career with five hits and seven RBI in the series against HCU. She chipped in a career-high four RBI in a 9-3 Game 2 win on Saturday while also delivering the game-winning hit in the closing game of the series. Her impressive weekend shot her to the top spot on the RBI leaderboard for the Cardinals with 15 on the season.
Speaking of leaderboards,
Shenita Tucker continued her rampage on the basepaths for the Cardinals as she recorded three steals in the series with HCU to push her season total to 18. This has her ranked fourth nationally and first in the Southland in that category. She is on track to demolish the single-season school record for LU of 25 set by Shannon Klaus in 2019.
On the mound,
Karyana Mitchell enjoyed another fantastic week as she recorded three more wins to move to 7-0 on the season. She allowed just three earned runs in 16 innings of work while also recording her first complete game of the season in Game 2 against HCU on Saturday in which she tied her career high with eight strikeouts.

LU will look for their first Power 5 win since 2020 when they travel to Waco for a road doubleheader at Baylor. The Bears are off to a 14-5 start on the year but are coming off a series loss against seventh-ranked Oklahoma State to start out Big 12 play. Shaylon Govan has lived up to her preseason All-Big 12 selection hitting .457 with two home runs and seven RBI while also drawing 17 walks to start the season. RyLee Crandall has been their standout on the mound with a 1.24 ERA and 7-0 record while Aliyah Binford has compiled 66 strikeouts in just 11 appearances.
