Harrison Carries Cardinals to Series Sweep Over Huskies

HOUSTON, Texas – Veronica Harrison played the role of hero for Lamar University softball on Sunday as her go-ahead two-RBI single in the top of the seventh inning proved the difference in a 4-3 win which secured the weekend sweep over Houston Christian. Big Red have now won 12 of their last 13 games and are off to their first 3-0 start in conference play under head coach Amy Hooks.

The first inning saw a stark contrast in pitch count which favored LU. The Cardinals got some help to start things off as five walks plated two runs including RBI for Brooke Davis and Veronica Harrison. Emma Wardlaw then produced a 1-2-3 bottom half of the frame on four pitches. Big Red seemed poised to do more damage in the top of the second with the bases loaded and no outs, but after a pitching change for the Huskies, no runs would be added.

HCU managed to tie things up with a two-RBI triple in the bottom of the third before taking the lead later in the inning on an RBI double. LU almost evened things up in the top of the sixth after an errant throw allowed Shenita Tucker to advance around the bases, but she was ultimately thrown at home leaving the Cardinals still trailing.

The Cardinals loaded the bases again in the top of the seventh, and this time, Harrison delivered with a two-RBI single to retake the lead for Big Red. Mitchell then got the final three outs including two strikeouts to pick up the win on the mound to improve to 7-0.

Harrison (3 RBI) and Jayne combined for LU's four hits with two apiece. Davis also logged an RBI on a drawn walk while Tucker continued her tear on the base paths with two more steals to increase her season total to 18. Wardlaw started the game on the mound and pitched three innings allowing three runs on four hits and a walk. Mitchell picked up the win with four scoreless innings of relief allowing just two hits with five strikeouts.

LU continues their road trip with a Tuesday doubleheader at Baylor with games at 4 and 6 p.m. Both games will be streamed on ESPN+.
