COLLEGE STATION, Texas – For the third time this season, the Lamar University men's tennis team stepped on the court against a nationally ranked opponent as they traveled to College Station, Texas to face No. 10 Texas A&M. The Cardinals put up strong fights on each individual court but was unable to get on the scoreboard falling 7-0 to the Aggies.
After Texas A&M took the doubles point, the Cardinals were trying to steal back momentum early in singles play. Lamar's
Leon Nickel and
Haruki Omori-Cowie pushed their opening sets to a tiebreaker before being decided. Nickel picked up an opening-set victory on court No. 3 with Nickel's 7-6 (7-3) decision over A&M's Grant Lothringer.
Unfortunately, the Aggies battled back to win the set at No. 5 singles as the Aggies' Lathan Skrobareck defeated Omori-Cowie, 7-6 (7-4). Despite the setback, Omori-Cowie was undaunted bringing the same fight to Skrobareck in the second set and again he would force a tiebreak. Unfortunately, Omori-Cowie was unable to push the match to a third set and moments later the Aggies prevailed on court No. 3 to complete the shutout.
Lamar returns to action Tuesday when they host North Dakota. The match against the Hawks will tip off at 1 p.m. from the Thompson Family Tennis Center.
