BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University added seven transfers – one junior college and six from four-year schools – signed five to National Letters of Intent on National Signing Day announced Pete Rossomando at a press conference Wednesday morning. The newest additions to the class bring the overall signing class to 29 (20 signees and nine transfers – two JUCOs).
Two members of the Cardinals' incoming class signed during the early signing period but waited until National Signing Day to announce their decision.
"You go into every recruiting season with a set of needs. Obviously, the transfer portal being what it is things are ever changing," said Rossomando. "But, you go in with some needs and spots you want to fill and I think our coaching staff has done an amazing job of canvasing the state of Texas and Louisiana to find not only the best players but the best fits for us."
The National Signing Day haul leans to the defensive side of the ball with only two newcomers on offense side. The additions include five defensive backs, three defensive linemen, two linebackers, a running back and a tight end.
"We wanted to get a little bit longer at corner, and we accomplished that with the addition of
Nicholas Brown," said Rossomando. "We also wanted to get more physical at linebacker and I felt like we did that too. We also continued to build on our transfer class. We believe those guys are going to come in and make an immediate impact."
Overall, between Early Signing Day and National Signing Day, the Cardinals class consists of 17 defensive players and 12 offensive. The overall position breakdown includes seven linebackers (two outside), seven defensive backs (four safeties), four defensive linemen (with one signee listed both as a lineman and linebacker). On the other side of the ball Lamar is bringing in three offensive linemen, three receivers, three running backs, two tight ends and a quarterback.
The incoming four-year transfers range from the Atlantic Coast Conference to the NCAA Division III level, with the junior college transfer coming to the Golden Triangle from Riverside Community College.
"When you're talking about transfers – especially those with just one year remaining – they normally don't want to take a shot with a 'rebuild,'" said Rossomando. "I think since we proved that we've made a lot of progress, we're not where we need to be yet, but they're maybe the ones who can help get us over the top and it increased our transfer class.
"I think the freshman class had more to do with relationships. As you build those and you start to show you're winning it obviously helps in how you develop a class and the better players you get," added Rossomando.
The newest additions represent several different regions of the country as they include seven Texans, and one player each from Louisiana, New Jersey, Georgia, North Carolina and Florida.
