BEAUMONT, Texas – Despite windy conditions and chilly fans, Lamar University softball was able to extend their win streak to six on Wednesday evening with a 6-2 victory against Southern. This marks the longest win streak for the Cardinals since 2018 and is the longest with head coach
Amy Hooks at the helm.

Big Red got off to a flying start in the first inning with RBI singles from
Jayne Sepulveda and
Trinity Brandon to give them an early 3-0 lead.
Sabrina Jolin would work out of jams in the second and third innings to keep the Jaguars scoreless.

The Cardinals would do more damage in the fourth as two more RBI singles from
Aubrey Brown and
Shenita Tucker pushed the lead to five. Southern would respond in the top of the fifth with an RBI single of their own to capture their first run of the game.

A peculiar play occurred in the top of the sixth inning after a foul out by the Jaguars. A collision at third base between Brandon and the runner was ruled as obstruction allowing the runners at second and third to both advance. The injured runner at third did not initially touch home plate leading to the final out of the inning being called when play resumed. After a lengthy review, however, the runner was allowed to come back on the field and touch home plate for the run to count with the other runner advancing to third.

The Cardinals would get the run back in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI groundout from
Mikaila Kenney, her first of the season. Jolin then finished off the game getting a lineout double play to seal the deal for Big Red.

Tucker led the team with two hits on the evening including her RBI single. Brandon (2 RBI), Sepulveda (RBI), Brown and
Karyana Mitchell each contributed a hit as well. Jolin went the distance on the mound for the Cardinals picking up the win allowing two runs on eight hits with three hit batters and three strikeouts.
