BEAUMONT, Texas – The wins keep coming for Lamar University softball as they took both games in Saturday's home doubleheader against Penn to push their win streak to eight, their longest since 2016.
Emma Wardlaw pitched a scoreless gem while
Brooke Davis' sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth being the only run of a 1-0 Game 1 win for the Cardinals. Meanwhile, multi-RBI games for
Shenita Tucker,
Cameron Niedenthal and
Makenzie Wright led Big Red to a 7-4 victory in Game 2.
Jayne Sepulveda had three of LU's four hits in Game 1 with
Trinity Brandon having the other. Davis would supply the only RBI of the game with her go-ahead sacrifice fly in the penultimate frame. Wardlaw shut out the Quaker lineup on the mound with her fourth complete game of the season allowing just three hits with five strikeouts.
Niedenthal (3 RBI), Brandon and
Aubrey Brown each recorded two hits in Game 2. Tucker and Wright each notched two RBI while
Veronica Harrison had a single as well.
Karyana Mitchell got the win for LU on the mound pitching into the sixth inning before recording the final out in the seventh to tally six innings of work in which she allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits with a walk, a hit batter and eight strikeouts.
Makayla Valle chipped in an inning of relief allowing two runs on three hits with a strikeout.
Game 1: LU 1, Penn 0
Neither team could make anything happen early as the most damage done was from the Cardinals stranding two runners in the bottom of the first. Penn had two baserunners get on with two outs in the top of the fifth, but Wardlaw was able to get out of the jam with a strikeout.
Big Red finally broke through in the bottom of the sixth as Sepulveda advanced to the third after an inning-opening single and was rewarded by a sacrifice fly from
Brooke Davis which secured the game's first run. Wardlaw managed to retire the last seven batters she faced to finish off a stellar performance on the mound.
Game 2: LU 7, Penn 4
It was more of the same to start off Game 2 from both teams through two innings. The Cardinal bats finally came alive in the bottom of third though as
Cameron Niedenthal cleared the bases on a three-RBI double to put LU in front. Brandon would triple to start the bottom of the fourth and beat out the throw home on a ball hit by Wright to push the lead to four.
The Quakers made some noise in the top of the fifth as two two-out hits and an error plated two runs to cut the Cardinal lead in half. A single and walk with two outs in the top of sixth forced Valle to come in on the mound, but she was able to record a strikeout to leave the runners on base.
Brandon's second extra-base hit of the game would be rewarded on another ball hit by Wright to extend the Big Red lead in the bottom of the sixth. Tucker would then knock in two more runs on an RBI single to provide some insurance for LU. Two triples and a double from the Quakers made things interesting in the top of the seventh, but Mitchell was able to come back in and get her eighth strikeout of the afternoon to seal the victory.
LU finishes off the weekend series with Penn on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the LU Softball Complex.
