NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Lamar University was in Nacogdoches, Texas Friday to take on a former rival in Stephen F. Austin. The match played out just like a rivalry should coming right down to the wire but unfortunately, the Cardinals wound up on the short end of a 4-3 decision.
After dropping the doubles point, Lamar had its chances in singles but could never quite get over the hump. After falling behind 1-0, the Cardinals battled right back in singles competition. LU got on the scoreboard at No. 6 singles position when
Natalia Turczuk defeated SFA's Avery Kinsey, 6-0, 6-2.
Unfortunately, Lamar was unable to string consecutive victories together Friday. The Ladyjacks responded to the loss on court 6 by picking up wins at Nos. 3 and 1 singles, respectively.
Sophomore
Megan Do put an end to the run momentarily when she defeated SFA's Alkmini Giannakogiorgou, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 4 singles. With Do's victory in the books, the Cardinals would need to win the two remaining matches to take the overall team victory. Unfortunately, the Cardinals split the two remaining courts with
Marika Mueller picking up a hard-four three-set victory at No. 2.
The Cardinals will be back in action Sunday when they return to the Schlief Tennis Complex to take on Texas State. The match against the Bobcats is slated for an 11 a.m. start.
