NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Playing their second match in three days in Nacogdoches, Texas, the Lamar University Cardinals (4-3) took on former Southland Conference foe Texas State. The Bobcats recorded a 6-1 victory in a match that was a lot closer than the final score indicated.
"It may be hard for fans to tell just by looking at the final score, but this was a lot closer than the score indicated," said LU head coach
David Wong. "We were in every match and had our shot in all nine individual matches (singles and doubles). I thought the doubles played a huge role. We were serving 5-4 at No. 2 doubles, but Texas State rallied to win the match and that only served to spark the other two matches.
"Although the singles matches were closely contested, Texas State managed to carry their momentum over from doubles play," added Wong.
Texas State grabbed the early lead after taking all three doubles matches. The Bobcats won on all three courts by a mere two games.
The Bobcats picked up the first singles match to take a 2-0 lead, but Lamar momentarily stimmed the tide. Freshman
Natalia Turczuk got Lamar on the scoreboard with a straight-sets decision over Texas State's Maria Lora, 7-5, 6-0.
Unfortunately, the Cardinals were unable to follow with victories on any other court as the Bobcats closed out the day with four consecutive singles victories.
The Cardinals will be back in action Friday when they travel to Huntsville, Texas to take on Sam Houston. The match against the Bobcats will begin at 2 p.m.
