BEAUMONT, Texas - The Lamar University soccer team put up 17 shots against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in a tight Southland Conference battle Friday at the LU Soccer Complex. Still, neither team could find the back of the net as it ended in a scoreless tie.

Five of LU's (3-6-4, 1-2-2 SLC) shots came from Isela Ramirez with two on goal while Arely Alaniz and Taylor Conway posted three shots each. Freshman Taylor Howard started in goal and collected five saves, which marks the second-highest total of the season for her. LU held Corpus Christi (5-2-5, 2-0-2 SLC) to 11 shots with five on goal.

LU spent the first part of the first half trying to break through the Islander defense while giving up six shots in a 20 minute-span. When it finally did break through, Lamar collected four chances to score and went into halftime with a 9-6 shots advantage.

The two teams applied offensive pressure with the Cardinals firing eight of the second half's 13 shots. Howard made crucial saves in the 58th and 74th minutes to deny the Islanders their best scoring chance. LU had its opportunities to break the tie in the 76th, 78th, and 83rd minutes. Then came the 86th minute when it appeared that Ramirez headed in the game's first goal only for it to be disallowed because of a Cardinal foul called in the box. That would be the last chance for either side as the final whistle blew to end the contest scoreless.

Big Red will turn its focus to Sunday as they'll have the Battle of the Border contest with McNeese. The kickoff will take place at 7:00 p.m.
