LAS VEGAS, Nev. – It was a tough start on the day for Lamar University and the Cardinals never fully recovered dropping a 3-0 (25-5, 25-15, 25-13) decision at UNLV.
Big Red fell behind by 12 points early in the first set and UNLV never looked back posting a 25-5 victory. While the Running Rebels grabbed a lead early in the second, Lamar managed to keep things close trailing by only three 11 serves into the set. Unfortunately, the Rebels scored 10 of the next 15 points to extend their advantage to take a 10-point victory in the second set.
The Cardinals struggled from the floor posting an .034 attack percentage (14-12-59) and just four blocks. Big Red's offense was led by six kills from
Lyric Jordan.
While the Cards were struggling on the attack, UNLV took full advantage recording 43 kills on 71 attempts (with nine errors) to post a .479 hitting percentage. The Running Rebels also added 12 service aces and blocked nine attempts.
Following the match, Jordan was named to the all-tournament team for her effort in all three matches.
The Cardinals return to action Thursday when they travel to Corpus Christi, Texas to open Southland Conference play against the Islanders. The match against A&M-Corpus Christi is slated to begin at 6:30 p.m.
