Lamar Falls to Maryland on Final Day of Canes Classic

Miami, Fla. – Lamar University (0-2) tried rallying from a slow start Saturday afternoon, and looked strong battling back against Maryland but in the end the Terrapins got the upper hand defeating LU, 3-0 (25-13, 25-17, 25-20).

The Cardinals finished the match with an .048 (20-16-83) attack percentage but those stats were skewed due to their opening-set struggles. Lamar held leads in both the second and third sets but couldn't find a way to finish them off. Freshman Gracie Cassidy and Lyric Jordan ended the day with five kills each. Cassidy also added five blocks while Jordan had three.

The first set saw Maryland jump out to an 11-0 lead before the Cardinals could get on the scoreboard. The Terrapins jumped out to an 11-0 lead but Big Red eventually settled down and scored eight of the next 11 points. Unfortunately, the opening set deficit was too much to overcome as Maryland took a 1-0 lead.

The second set opened as a back-and-forth affair that saw the two teams rotate the lead. Despite trailing by only five midway through the set, the Terrapins managed to grab a seven-point lead late and hold on for a 2-0 advantage in the match.

It was a different story in the third as Lamar came out on fire. The Cardinals scored the set's first four points, led by strong serving from Jodie Edmonds and quality blocking at the net from Cassidy and Jordan. The set remained close with the Terrapins not taking their first lead until, 10-9, but Lamar responded. Unfortunately, the set remained tight the rest of the way through and Maryland pulled out the third set victory for the match.

The Cardinals return to action Friday when the travel to San Antonio, Texas to compete in the Roadrunner Classic. Lamar will face tournament-host UTSA (10 a.m.) and Tarleton State (4 p.m.) Friday.
